Fish feeding can have disastrous effects on reef and fish health. CORAL, in collaboration with Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources and local organizations, has recently launched the "Take a Bite out of Fish Feeding" campaign. This campaign provides dive and snorkel businesses across Hawaii the opportunity to band together and put a stop to this practice. CORAL REEF CONSERVATION ACT MOVES FORWARD IN CONGRESS
Responding to the last edition of e-current, many of you asked your representatives to support the Coral Reef Ecosystem Conservation Amendment Act. We are glad to announce that the act is now active in both the House and Senate. The House’s Natural Resources Committee approved the act and recommended it for full House approval. In the Senate, Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI) introduced the act into committee. If you have not yet contacted your representatives, it’s not too late! SECRET BALLOT REVERSES DECISION TO PROTECT RED CORAL
Scientists, conservationists and many government officials expressed outrage when Delegates voting by secret ballot reversed a proposal to protect precious red coral [link archived]—a popular jewelry centerpiece. The Delegates overturned the initial decision to list these overfished species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES.)
