Panda Butterflyfish
(Chaetodon adiergastos)Panda butterflyfish (Chaetodon adiergastos) [8] Named for the panda-like black spots over its eyes, the panda butterflyfish (Chaetodon adiergastos) inhabits reefs of the Western Pacific. Generally found in pairs or groups, these fish prefer areas with high soft coral cover. Unlike most species of butterflyfish (and there are well over one hundred!), panda butterflyfish are active at night. These panda butterflyfish were photographed in Indonesia.

The 2012 Calendar Is Here! » [19]
Our limited-edition wall calendar is already gracing our walls here at CORAL, and we can attest that it is gorgeous! If you haven't received your calendar [20] yet, we'll be thrilled to send you one with your gift of $50 or more.

Dr. Nancy Knowlton [21] Dr. Nancy Knowlton Receives Heinz Award [22]
Congratulations to CORAL board member Dr. Nancy Knowlton, one of this year's Heinz Award recipients. This prestigious award recognizes Dr. Knowlton's groundbreaking research in coral reef ecology, which has shown that the ocean is both more diverse and more threatened than previously understood. Reef Resilience Training [24] Reef Resilience Training with a Twist [25]
We recently completed another successful global reef resilience to climate change workshop, this time with a twist. While reef resilience trainings have historically targeted only reef managers, CORAL adapted the curriculum for marine recreation providers this time. These professionals visit the reefs daily and are a key resource for detecting changes that inform management decisions. Hear what the participants and trainers had to say! Learn more » [26]

Coral Conservation Message Video [27] Coral Conservation Message for President Lobo of Honduras [28]
On Dr. Sylvia Earle's recent expedition to Honduras, CORAL brought her to see Cordelia Banks, an area of exceptionally high staghorn coral cover. After her visit, Dr. Earle was moved to send this beautiful message of hope-and call to action-to Honduran President Porfirio Lobo Sosa. You can see why we're working so hard to win protection for this outstanding area!

Shifting Baselines [30] [31]Dr. Jeremy Jackson Illuminates the Consequences of
Shifting Baselines
[32]
We were honored to welcome Dr. Jeremy Jackson to CORAL's headquarters for an enlightening discussion about shifting baselines-the phenomenon in which each generation perceives a more degraded ecosystem state as "normal"-and the implications for coral reef conservation. Dr. Jackson, Director of the Center for Marine Biodiversity & Conservation at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, is an editor of the new volume Shifting Baselines: The Past & Future of Ocean Fisheries.
