Beyond CRSD

Although the Coral Reef Sustainable Destination (CRSD) model continues to be the main focus of our conservation work, we are also expanding our reach through important initiatives that are international in scope.

CORAL REEF CSI

Coral Reef CSI [1]

Using forensic science techniques modified for use underwater, Coral Reef CSI provides resource managers with the tools, strategies, and specialized training required to collect underwater evidence that will stand up in court. The program has now trained over 300 marine protected area managers, enforcement officers, academics, and litigators from coral reef destinations around the world.

CORAL is leading a worldwide training program to build a global network of reef managers who are prepared to respond to climate change. With funding from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Oceans, Environment, and Science (OES), CORAL is adapting and implementing a reef resilience training curriculum developed by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and The Nature Conservancy. The curriculum trains coral reef managers in adaptive management strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change on reef survival.

CORAL is developing programs that will increase shark protection in our Indo-Pacific project sites. In Fiji we are working with partners to advance legislation for a Fijian National Shark Sanctuary. We are securing endorsements from traditional Fijian leaders and developing wide-reaching media and education campaigns. In Indonesia's Raja Ampat archipelago, where unmonitored harvest of sharks is a pervasive concern because of the area's remoteness, CORAL is building awareness about the problem through a multi-faceted outreach campaign.
