Bluestriped Grunt (Haemulon sciurus)

Bluestriped Grunt (Haemulon sciurus) [10] Bluestriped grunts (Haemulon sciurus) are commonly found on coral reefs throughout the Caribbean. The common name "grunt," which describes a family of about 150 marine fish species, comes from the pig-like grunting sound these fish produce by grinding teeth located deep within their throats. The sound is amplified by their taut air bladders, which act as resonators. This bluestriped grunt was photographed in Cozumel, Mexico.Learn more about our programs in Mexico » [11]

> Help the Reefs Quick Tip [12]
Air conditioning can make the August heat much more bearable, but it can also use a lot of electricity. Setting your air conditioner just a couple of degrees higher can make a big difference in energy savings. When you leave the house, make sure to set your air conditioner to a higher temperature or, better yet, turn it off altogether!
