Doing Nothing Will Cost the Earth

Consumers concerned about the personal costs of an emissions trading scheme should ponder the alternative, environmentalists warned yesterday.

The Federal Government has estimated that household bills could rise by $624 a year under its amended carbon pollution reduction scheme. This is based on an anticipated increase in electricity, gas and food bills of $12 a week in the first two years of the scheme, although low income households will be fully compensated.

But the NSW Greens MP John Kaye said rather than looking at the costs of a carbon trading scheme, consumers should consider the price of doing nothing.
