Common Lionfish (Pterois volitans) [10] The lionfish, which is part of the scorpionfish family, gets its name from the venomous fin spines common to most species. You can typically find the lionfish hovering above the ocean floor, or nestled in a cozy crevice during the day. Lionfish become active hunters at night, when they seek out crustaceans and small fish. This lionfish was photographed in Hawaii. Read more about Hawaii » [11]

In recognition of Jeremy's prowess with an underwater camera, CORAL will be sending him a copy of Reef, a stunning photography book featuring coral reef images. Thanks to all of our members who emailed President Bush to show support for the Mariana Trench National Marine Monument. The results of our advocacy campaign are described below. In this edition of E-Current Photo, we announce the Monterey Bay Aquarium's newest Seafood Watch card, and CORAL donor, photographer, and columnist Jeff Yonover gets up close and personal with some pygmy seahorses.

 

As you start making New Year's resolutions, remember to keep the protection of our environment at the top of your list. We remain optimistic about our ability to build healthy coral reef communities around the world, and look forward to sharing our progress in 2009 with our loyal CORAL community.
