CORAL is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. We depend on the generous support of individual donors, foundations, and corporate and government grants to build grassroots conservation partnerships among local community members, government leaders, and marine recreation providers in seven field locations around the world. We are the only international organization working exclusively to unite communities to protect coral reefs from the effects of climate change and other human-induced stressors.

Over the next five years, CORAL will expand its conservation work by more than double, creating Coral Reef Sustainable Destinations (CRSD [1]) in new locations worldwide. From four centers of excellence [2], CORAL will provide education, outreach, and micro-financing for projects related to sustainable tourism, community development, sustainable financing, and effective management of marine protected areas. Through this ambitious expansion of CORAL’s programs, we intend to build reef resiliency the world over, ensuring that future generations can enjoy healthy coral reefs for years to come.

2010 Highlights

In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010, CORAL recognized nearly one million dollars from the generosity of individual donors, the highest level in our organization's history. We received approximately $440,000 from a variety of institutional and family foundations, as well as an additional $77,000 from state and federal grants supporting our work in Hawaii.

In the same period, CORAL invested about $1,180,000 in our international conservation project sites and our educational outreach initiatives. Supporting services included just over $228,000 in fundraising expenses and about $156,000 in management and general expenses.
