Dear Friends,
Welcome to the International Year of Reef 2008. CORAL is proud to be an official Friend of IYOR 2008, a worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability and to motivate people to take action to protect them. 10 years have past since the first IYOR and great strides have been made toward protecting reefs. However, now faced with the one-two punch of climate change and ocean acidification, we have to redouble our efforts. Our plans this year include a June event in Bonaire, as well as public awareness activities that reach out to new audiences with the message that we can save coral reefs.
10 years ago the first IYOR (www.iyor.org) carried a grave message about the future of coral reefs. 10 years later, despite the setback of climate change, we have the tools to take action. But, we have to act fast.
This generation holds the future of coral reefs in its hands. I sincerely believe that without our concerted efforts, within our lifetime coral reefs may be lost forever.
Cheers,

Brian Huse, Executive Director
International Year of the Reef 2008
Rick MacPherson, CORAL's Director of Programs participated in the launching activities of IYOR in Washington, D.C. last week.
