Manila, Philippines - "Marine protected areas (MPAs) may soon be established, maintained, and managed by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and local government units following the passage of a House bill seeking to ensure environmental sustainability.

Under the measure approved by the House on third and final reading, MPAs are mandated to be established in all coastal municipalities and cities. The bill also provides the preservation of existing MPAs in the country.

Deputy Speaker and Quezon Rep. Lorenzo TaƱada III, who principally authored House Bill 57, said the House-backed proposed law would provide for the preservation of mangrove swamp and the protection of fishery reservations, reserves, refuges and sanctuaries."
