CORAL Supports Exhibition at the Smithsonian What do advanced mathematics, art, coral reef conservation, and handicrafts have in common? They all come together in the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef, a thought-provoking project created and curated by Margaret and Christine Wertheim at the Institute For Figuring. This fall, CORAL is helping to support an exhibition of this awareness-raising artwork at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., opening October 16. Learn more » |

High Temperatures Threaten Coral Reefs Worldwide Unusually high sea surface temperatures this year have already caused widespread bleaching in the Indo-Pacific, and now corals are starting to bleach in the Caribbean as well. NOAA bleaching outlook predictions for the Caribbean are fairly grim, but the outcome could be less severe if tropical storms help to cool the water. Sea Turtle Management Gets a Boost in Belize During the height of this summer's nesting season, CORAL helped to fund and facilitate a training to improve management of endangered sea turtles in Belize. Two turtle experts trained local environmental managers from SEA Belize in field techniques for assessing and protecting nesting turtles and their hatchlings. Honduras and Micronesia Throw Down Global Challenge to Save Sharks Honduras and Palau, small countries on opposite sides of the world, have both taken important measures to stop shark fishing in their waters through the creation of marine protected areas. Now the presidents of both countries have come together in New York to issue a challenge to the rest of the world to conserve these critical top predators.
