The Ningaloo Coast—the rugged northern wilderness area where tourists swim with whale sharks—has been nominated for World Heritage listing.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett said in Perth today the area was precious, incredible and unique.

Mr Garrett praised the region's significant natural assets, including a limestone ridge running through the nominated area, and its rich marine life such as dugongs, turtles and the world's largest fish, the whale shark.
