Coalition Calls on Congress for Coral Protection

San Francisco - Concerned about the decline of coral reefs worldwide, including those in the Florida Keys, which scientists say have diminished by 50 to 80 percent in the last decade, a coalition of conservationists is calling on Congress to help protect them.
The Coral Reef Alliance, Greenpeace USA, SeaWeb, Sierra Club and the World Wildlife Fund are among the 44 conservation organizations which, along with more than 100 marine scientists, sent signed letters to the U.S. Congress and the White House last week, urging lawmakers to reauthorize the U.S. Coral Reef Conservation Act of 2000, legislation that was designed to support research and management of coral reefs.
