In 1965, the Federal Government of Malaysia established the Marine Fisheries Department of Sarawak (MFDS) whose primary function is to develop and manage the marine and brackishwater fisheries. The Research Division of MFDS undertakes strategic and tactical research in support of fisheries development management in Sarawak. The research was focused on fishery resources and capture technology. From 1965 until now, research vessels were utilized to carry out research surveys on fish and prawn resources: K.K. Dueh Putih (1965-1970), K.K. Merah (1973-1985), K.K. Malong (1973-1993) and K.K. Manchong (1985). Research in marine and brackishwater aquaculture had started in 1980 in order to accelerate the aquaculture development in the vast areas of potential sites in Sarawak. In 1995, this institute was placed under direct supervision of the Fisheries Research Institute of Malaysia based in Penang. The name of organization is now changed to Fisheries Research Institute, Malaysia Sarawak
