Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network
The Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network (WIDECAST) was founded in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1981. Today this unique volunteer network of scientists and other experts includes national coordinators in more than 30 Caribbean States and territories. WIDECAST's mission is to bring the best available science to bear on policy-making concerning the region's six species of endangered sea turtles, and to promote regional cooperation in the conservation and management of these migratory species. The network emphasizes capacity building at local and national levels by sponsoring training workshops, long-term population monitoring projects, community-based conservation initiatives, and public awareness campaigns. WIDECAST is a Partner Organization of the UNEP Caribbean Environment Programme (Kingston, Jamaica) and network members work collaboratively with UNEP Cartagena Convention Parties to develop comprehensive national Sea Turtle Recovery Action Plans, which provide recommendations for priority conservation and management action throughout the Western Atlantic basin.
