Marine Aquarium Council
The Marine Aquarium Council (MAC) is a not-for-profit organization working to ensure the sustainability of coral reefs, coastal communities and the marine aquarium trade and hobby. MAC's mission is to conserve coral reefs and other marine ecosystems by creating standards and certification for those engaged in the collection and care of ornamental marine life from reef to aquarium. MAC works with a global network of marine ornamental collectiors, wholesalers, retailers and hobbyists; conservation and government organizations; and public aquariums. Its international performance standards for the marine aquarium trade spans the entire chain of custoy and are developed through an international, multi-stakeholder process that is consistent with World Trade Organization and International Standards Organization guidelines. MAC produces guides, manuals and forms to facilitate certification; helps create consumer demand for MAC Certification; and establishes an international database on the global marine aquarium trade and scientific methods for assessing and monitoring coral reefs and fisheries involved in the trade.
